Juneau organized labor opposes Proposition 2

Juneau Central Labor Council, ILWU Local 200 encourage members to vote no

JUNEAU, Alaska — Sept. 2, 2024— The Juneau Central Labor Council, the largest organized labor coalition in Juneau, has unanimously voted to oppose Proposition 2. Representing 16 unions across diverse industries, the Juneau CLC is dedicated to advancing the interests of working people by fostering job creation and economic growth in Juneau. Proposition 2 goes against these efforts by threatening jobs, economic stability and essential public services in our community. Protect Juneau’s Future welcomes the CLC’s support in opposing this harmful measure.

“This measure would directly affect local union jobs by eliminating 5,000 man-hours per year, leading to a 15% loss in wages,” said Trenton English, president of the Juneau CLC.

“Such a loss would have severe repercussions, including the potential disqualification of union workers from pension benefits and diminished retirement prospects, adversely impacting Juneau families.”

In their formal letter of opposition, the Juneau CLC highlighted the significant economic impact of lost spending and lost city revenues if Proposition 2 passes. With this statement, the CLC joins the International Longshore & Warehouse Union Local 200,  which has long-opposed Proposition 2.

ILWU Local 200 represents Unit 16 Juneau longshore and warehouse workers. “Saturdays are very important to our longshoremen’s livelihoods. We perform all the essential work necessary for the cruise industry from line handling, loading and unloading cargoes and operating equipment on all of the docks in the Port of Juneau,” said Dennis Young, president of  ILWU Alaska Longshore Division. “Proposition 2 directly threatens our livelihoods reducing our seasonal income by almost 15%, reducing the hours needed to qualify for health insurance and pension substantially.”

Protect Juneau’s Future is proud to stand with Juneau’s organized labor to oppose Prop 2.

“Prop 2 isn’t just an attack on the visitor industry,” said Portland Sarantopoulos, campaign manager of Protect Juneau’s Future. “The consequences of this proposition are far-reaching, affecting business owners and workers in every corner of our city. Protect Juneau’s Future is proud to stand with Juneau’s organized labor to oppose Prop 2.”
